Bottom of the Sea Parties
Under the waves, where fish swim and play, sea
creatures are gathering…for a wondrous event! We’ve
gathered everything you need to decorate and celebrate
in an enchanted world, under the sea. |
Party
Tips
The key to pulling off a coordinated
event: Evoke your theme throughout the affair. Whether that
theme is as general as a season or a feeling, or as specific as
a special flower, it should be the subtle thread that ties
everything together. Your location, invitations, flowers, menu,
cake, and favors should all cleverly reflect one common concept.
Then, get as creative as you can!
Location:
The perfect location for a bottom
of the sea event would be at an Aquarium or you could charter a
yacht. In Houston a couple of ideas would be to hold your event
at Moody Gardens, Houston Zoo & Aquariums or the Aquarium
Downtown.
If an Aquarium is not an option
then start by covering a wall with a
Coral Reef Scene Setter or
Dolphin's Paradise Mural.
Slogans:
After selecting this theme
for your party, choose a slogan to use in your invitations, and to use
in tying in decorations and personalized favors for your enchanted
Under the Sea theme. Find the perfect slogan for your party by
trying one of the following, or by thinking of one that suits your
precious child.
- "Under the Sea
Adventure!”
- “Birthday Enchantment Under
the Sea…Mermaids, Dolphins, and Brittany!”
- “Have a Whale of a Time at
Jon’s Birthday!”
- “Take the Plunge!”
Decorating Ideas:
Welcome guests with a spray of
bubbles.
Use a color scheme of aqua,
violet and green to bring the ocean inside your ballroom or
banquet room.
Hang sheer panels from the wall &
ceilings and have your local lighting company project a moving
bubble effect on the surfaces. This will create a constant sense
of movement, almost like being underwater.
At some point during the planning
stages of your event the subject of linens will arise. When it
does stop and think of all the possibilities available to you.
Remember the tops of the tables provide you with a very large
surface area and covering them with a themed tablecloth is the
easiest way to change the feel of a room.. It is also the most
cost effective way to decorate. Ten tables covered with a
Fish Pattern, Seashell Pattern, a blue, green & yellow ocean
pattern or aqua satin will transform your event location into an
under the sea fantasy. If you are in the Cypress, TX area,
contact
our
consultants to get a quote on linens for your under the sea
event.
Another alternative is to cover
your tables with a
Coral Reef Tablecover.

Create
a stunning Ocean Entryway. Use the same
technique as used to make a standing
Balloon
Column, but instead of standing the column up, attach it to
fishing line or PVC pipe which has been secured about 2
feet off the ground.
Attach white
260 balloons (the long ones used for balloon
twisting) to the ocean floor that you have created. Float helium
filled Mylar
ocean creature balloons above the sea.
To create the
illusion of bubbles in your ocean, use helium filled
12" Crystal Balloons , blow them up to various sizes and
attach to fishing line and let them float above the ocean.
You will
want to get a
plastic balloon inflator to
blow up the 260s balloons, since they are impossible to blow up by
mouth. |
A Bubble Machine can also
be used to create underwater bubbles.
Mount pearly nautilus shells on
blue sea glass for centerpieces.
A
Treasure Chest is a delightful decoration that can be used
as a gift drop box, and as a prop for a buried treasure party
game.
Give
fish favors to guests.
Games & Activities Take a Trip Underwater
If time permits, take your guests on a
trip to your local aquarium to learn about everyday life under the sea!
Many aquariums offer tours and programs especially for children.
Perhaps your guests will be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of Nemo!
Octopus Tag
The birthday child begins as the Octopus
in the middle of a large playing area. All other players are Fish who
must try to run past the Octopus to the other side of the playing area.
If a Fish is tagged, he or she holds hands with the Octopus and become
a tentacle to help tag more fish. The last Fish alive, wins!
Fish, Fish, Shark
This game is based on the traditional
“Duck, Duck, Goose” game, but instead of a goose chasing a duck, a
shark chases a fish. Start with all your little fishes seated in a
circle. Designate a leader to walk around the circle, tapping guests on
the head and calling each person a fish. After several guests have been
tapped, the leader chooses one guest and yells out “Shark” when
tapping him or her on the head. The Shark chases the leader and tries
to tag her as she races around the circle and back to the Shark’s
spot. If the leader is caught, then she remains the leader another
round. If the leader escapes the Shark, the Shark becomes the new
leader. Repeat the game until every guest has a chance to be the
leader.
Fish for a Name Tag
Make a fish-shaped name tag for each
guest using thick, colorful paper. Decorate with markers and attach a
paper clip to the mouth of each fish. Place all the fish in an empty
kiddie pool or decorated box. As each guest arrives, hand him or her a
fishing pole (sturdy stick with a yarn “line” and a magnet
“hook”). When a fish is “caught,” write the child’s name on
it or give them the name of their favorite sea creature.
Food & Cake Ideas
Serve Goldfishtm,
submarine sandwiches or sandwiches cut with fish cookie cutters, Doletm
Pineapple Fish (they are pre-cut in the can), fish fruit snacks, and
sunken treasure nuggets (cheese balls.)
Cut fish out of the rice crispy treats
with a cookie cutter. Place them on a large cake board covered
with dark
blue water gossamer, and
frost each one differently with bright colors of frosting. There
is no right or wrong way to decorate the fish…and you can even
involve your child in the fun! If you prefer a more traditional
cake, simply cut a 9 X 13” cake into a fish shape, and decorate it
with bright colors
Chicken fingers or Fried Popcorn
Shrimp
Make blue J-ellotm
according to the directions on the box. Fill each glass with blue
J-ellotm and refrigerate to let it partially set. Add
a few Swedish Fish to each glass. Test the first one, as they
shouldn’t sink to the bottom, but should “swim” in the water.
Continue to refrigerate until firm. The kids will love this one!
Try our “Deep Blue Sea Juice”,
and you’ll fill the room with “ooohs and aaahs”. Start by
serving blue punch. After you have placed a filled glass in front
of each guest, add some seaweed dust (a few Pop Rockstm
candies) to each one. Since this candy is processed with carbon
dioxide, it will crackle, pop, and spit when it comes into contact with
a liquid.
Beach Pail & Shovels or
Clam Shell Bowls make a perfect serving dishes for
snacks such as pretzels, chips, and fruit.
Serve a cute Fish
Birthday Cake.

Giant
Octopus Standee
or Giant
Shark Mouth Standee are the ultimate Under the Sea party props. Take the time to have each child pose alone, and with the birthday child for pictures inside the standee. The priceless photos can then be mailed to each guest with a thank you note at a later date.
The Octopus or Shark can also be used for two other party activities:
- Gather a couple of beanbags, or fill some uninflated balloons with rice. Use the Standee for a beanbag toss game.
- Prior to the party, fill 4-5 water bubble balloons for each child. Have mom, dad, or another good sport peek out of the opening, and then let the water fly!
