Light Up Yo Yo

Here is a fun way to decorate for your music theme. These containers made from 33 1/3 records can be used as a serving dish or turn them upside down and use as a base for a centerpiece. Some ideas for using them include:

Use record bowls to serve snacks or as a candy dish.
Place a glass cylinder vase with floating candle on top & decorate with a floral ring.
Place a pillar candle on top and add a floral ring.
Stack & glue them together to make an elevated base for your vase or candle.
Place a hurricane globe on top and add a floral ring.
Get creative! You will be amazed at what you can come up with.

In the picture to the left, we used the record bowl to create a centerpiece for a 50's theme. We glued a flat record to the top of the upside down record bowl (creating a surface to set a bubble bowl on top). We added a fuchsia floral ring and floating candle. Flat 33 1/3 records were used as charger plates and yoyo's were placed on the top of the napkins for favors.

Directions:

Don't have a collection of old 33 1/3 records to work with like I do. Start by visiting thrift shops and antique store, ask friends and family for old records (make sure the record is not valuable before you melt it down).

Preheat oven to 200 degrees.

Place record over a Pyrex or oven proof glass bowl (use a bowl that is large enough that the record can melt over it). Place bowl and record in the oven for 2 - 5 minutes. It is ready to remove as soon as the record has taken the shape if the bowl. Be careful when removing from the oven the glass bowl will be hot. The record will not be to hot. Let sit for about a minute then remove the record from the glass bowl.

More Centerpiece Ideas:

Make foil poufs in your choice of colors and attach to a 10" flat Styrofoam base. Add a large 12" music note in the center flanked by two smaller 4" music notes on each side. Accent with music note garland.

Foil poufs in black and red attached to a round 6" wide Styrofoam base, add silver instruments. & onion grass. Accent your design with black and silver star sprays (2 more sprays on the sides) and a black Clef sign in the center.
