Fall Celebration
Ideas
Autumn is all about
feeling cozy. The leaves are falling outside, the fires are
crackling inside, turkeys are roasting in the oven and hot chocolate
beckons at every hour. This homey feeling is reflected with these
parties - laden with burnt orange and jewel tones - everyone will
want to gather around and celebrate, family and friends - hour after
hour.
The key to pulling off a coordinated
event: Evoke your theme throughout the affair. Whether that theme is as
general as a season or a feeling, or as specific as a special flower, it should be the subtle thread that ties
everything together. Your location, invitations, flowers, menu,
cake, and favors should all cleverly reflect one common concept.
Then, get as creative as you can!

Keep kid's busy by
having them make place cards. Provide table, paper, crayons or
markers, scissors, glue, etc. Have the kids play pin the heart on the scarecrow. You will need a
bandana for a blindfold, tape, and
some paper hearts and a scarecrow cut out. Then wind the kids up and let them go. Make sure to have a couple
of cute fall prizes for the winners.

HOSTS
Some Trimmings
- Invite one "outsider" each year.
- Have a group photo taken each
year.
- Pack a few small baskets of
extras--deliver where they'll be appreciated.
Table Top Tips:
A good place to start is
with the table. Because Thanksgiving is a fall festival, start by
putting down a yellow, orange or red tablecloth symbolic of the
season, then build from there.
Decorate your
Thanksgiving table with beautiful
fall tableware. The
"accessories" on a dining table can enhance the eating experience,
an artistically dressed table is always nice to behold.
Use seasonal place
settings, centerpieces, serving dishes and serve ware. Try leaf
shaped place mats. A Harvest china pattern graced with brilliant
shades of pomegranate, pumpkin, eggplant and lime.
Once the table is set,
you can move onto ambiance. Put seasonal candles on the table, and
throw a log in the fireplace, if you have one.
For a simple and
inexpensive table decoration, Break the stem off each gourd or
pumpkin and carve out a hole in the top to hold a taper candle. For
a more elegant look use candlesticks that you have, press a
gourd on the candlestick spike and then insert the candle.

For a simple and
inexpensive place card idea use small gourds or pumpkins and write
the persons name or initials on the gourd with a pencil then trace
over it with a permanent marker.

Fall
Flower Arrangements & Centerpieces Good Enough to Eat
Adding fruits and vegetables to clear glass containers brings
another colorful--and inexpensive--dimension to flower arrangements.
Put together a fall arrangement by filling a tall glass cylinder
with fruits & vegetables. Fill with water, then add colorful fall
flowers like Mums. Change the water daily. If you want to eat the
veggies in the vase, you must do it that day. Otherwise, they won't
be any good. When using citrus fruits in arrangements, be sure the
pretty center of the fruit is visible by pressing the cut side
against the glass. Baby artichokes, cranberries, limes, kiwis,
berries, sugar-snap peas, whole peas, potatoes and nearly every
other type of vegetable looks beautiful in the vase water.
Frosted Fruit: Dip red apples,
pears, lemons, oranges and assorted grapes into egg whites beaten
until frothy; then dip into graduated sugar. Let sit on rack, over
waxed paper, until dry. Arrange in compote, with laurel or lemon
leaves.
Grapes, Wheat: Lay sheaves of
wheat down center of table; top with grapes & nuts.
Oranges, Lemons and Limes:
Fill bowl with crushed chicken wire, then with green leaves. Cut
wooden dowels 12" to 15" long; insert among leaves; put oranges,
lemons and limes on end of each stick.
Autumn Cornstalks
are a perfect accent for your Autumn and Thanksgiving gatherings
Add a traditional
harvest look to your home with Pumpkins & Gourds. Leaves can add
color to your fall decor.
Use Pumpkin Pie
Scented Votive Candles. Place one at each place setting for a
special guest favor.
Turkey Plus
After grace, the oldest member of the
family purposes a toast to a new arrival; to John, home from college
or Sue, starting a new business.
- Serve the bird with fanfare:
Circle the table with it before you set it before the host.
- Make a ceremony of breaking the
wishbone.
- Feature a flaming dessert.
- How about 3 cheers for the cook
(s).
- While grownups sit at the table
& reminisce, draft helpers to wash dishes.
Banishing After-Dinner Doldrums
Declare a siesta for
those who desire uninterrupted snoozing. The others can take a walk
in the autumn air.
-
Tune in on a
football game or go to a local game. Whisk our of hiding
chrysanthemum corsages for all the ladies.
-
Look up the best
bets on TV, so special programs aren't overlooked.
-
Have a punch bowl
ready for after-dinner open house guests.
