Fairy Costumes

The fairy motif can speak of Fall, Winter, Springtime or Summer, love, liveliness, and high spirited youthful adventure.

The motif for a fairy theme is endless. Just think of the scenes from literary works like: Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night’s Dream’s" ; Lewis Carroll’s "Alice in Wonderland", the folklore of the Brothers Grimm, "Cinderella" and "Peter Pan".

Here are some ideas for motif, to get your creative juices flowing:

  • Fairy rings
  • toadstool-dwelling elves
  • pixies
  • hollow hills
  • the lore of plants and flowers
  • enchanted woods
  • woodland creatures
  • mushrooms & toadstools popping up all over
  • potions
  • wands & fairy wings
  • the unwitting transport of subjects to fairyland.

Woodland Fairy Theme

Color Scheme: For a Woodlands Fairy Theme choose Natural Earth tones & Fall Colors (orange, red, yellow, gold, brown).

Decorating Idea:

If you choose to use a Woodland Fairy Theme, use lots of fall flowers, autumn leaves, ferns, ivy, flower garlands, wreaths, feathers, mushrooms, trees, pumpkins and straw bales. These could be real or artificial. You could also make your own flowers from tissue paper (instructions in crafts below).

Use an inexpensive Autumn landscape scene setter and a gold and bronze metallic leaves centerpiece. A fall tinsel garland and wreath would also be ideal. Dangle gold, green and orange leaf swirls from the ceiling. Use a colorful leaf border on the wall or on the table as a runner.

Add some Woodland Creatures (frogs, deer, wolf, rabbits, squirrels, skunks, dragonflies, butterflies, bumble bees, birds, or ladybugs) in decorating. These could be figures, or stuffed animals.

Have lots of chiffon and tulle on hand for dresses, costumes and decorating. Don't forget the Fairy Wings and wands.  A favorite of woodland fairies is the Tinker Bell Body Glitter.

Head Wreaths made of fall flowers, shells or ivy can add such elegance.

Hang a Rope Swing accented with fall flowers and greenery to a tree branch.

Use a photo mural with a woodland, lake or garden scene or hang woodland posters.

Use grass covering for floors and sprinkle with flower petals.

Hang glittery fairy shapes from trees or ceiling.

Sprinkle Tinker Bell Confetti  or glitter on the path to the door or party area, telling children they're fairy footprints.

Tie glitter star shapes to the ends of the balloon strings.

Bubbles for all the fairies.

Here are some ideas for materials that can be used for decorating, most of these are available from your local florist supply or craft stores.

Set the groundwork for a natural themed display using natural twig runners and placemats.

Wheat grass (available in Health Food Stores) can be placed in rustic metal planters or pots to liven up any table.

Grape bunches, acorns and leaves can be wrapped around lightweight forms to gracefully mimic nature's shapes.

Beautiful naturally dried and preserved herbs and grasses arranged in freestanding bunches for effortless yet striking decor on a buffet tables, guest tables or anywhere a natural look is desired.

Free-form branch type vases are striking with fresh or dried flowers. Add natural willow bundles for height and texture to your setting.

Redwood, wood rounds are also a wonderful natural decor accent that could be used for this theme.

Use Rosemary plants in a natural, dark rattan basket with deep evergreen leaves for a colorful splash of purple and lavender blooms.

Cream-colored Orchids planted in natural stone-look paper Mache pots add Eye-catching highlights to any table.

Red & White Fairy Party

Color Scheme: The most immediately recognizable symbol for fairyland is the red-and-white fly agaric mushroom. A wonderful fairy party can be created using a red & white color scheme.

Use red & white mushrooms to decorate your party area. Make mushroom with white stems and tops that are red with white spots. (instructions for mushrooms below).

Fun Decorating Tips

Balloons are an inexpensive & fun way to decorate for any event. Make balloon cluster & rosettes to hang on walls and to pin to the corners of tables.  basic balloon decorating ideas.

You can also make balloon flowers and use them to make an arch over a doorway or just to make a flower garden by tying them to wooden dowels of varying heights and sticking them around the yard or if the party is inside stick the dowels down into florist clay to hold them upright. Cover the clay with some green moss. You could also tie the balloon flowers to a stair rail or hang them from the ceiling. Use 5" Balloons for small flowers and 11" Balloons for large flowers.

Fairy Crafts & Activities:

Make a Mushroom

Base (mushroom stem) - Your base could be a paper Mache container (available at floral supply or florist's in a variety of sizes) I use a 12" x 11" for a large mushroom and graduate them down for smaller mushrooms. For a base sturdy enough to sit upon, I have used metal containers (the ones popcorn is sold in during the holiday season works great) and coffee cans for smaller mushroom. Paint them the color you desire.

Top - Use foam board and cut in a circle about 3" wider than the bottom of your container. If you want it to be sturdy enough to sit upon, use plywood instead of foam board. Turn the base container up-side-down (bottom of container will be top of the mushroom stem). Center top over base, drill 4 to 6 holes through the top and base. Secure top onto base with bolts.

Cover the top with batting. Then, cover batting and foam board with a circle of fabric (fabric can match your base color or be totally different).

Make sure to cut the circle of fabric large enough to cover the batting and foam board and wrap under the foam board to be stapled).

One of my favorites is to use a white base, cover the top with a red fabric and paint large white dots on the top.

Lots of Tissue Flowers

To make tissue flowers use 6-8 sheets of brightly colored tissue paper for each flower. Lay them on top of each other in a pile, and fold them accordion style. Twist the layers together at their centers with a piece of fuzzy pipe cleaner. Then fluff each layer of tissue, one at a time. Cut a couple of leaves from two pieces of green construction paper and tape to the back side.

Make a Flower Head Wreath

Materials Needed:
5/8-inch Ribbon ( different colors)
Flowers, Flower garland, Ivy garland & etc.
Floral tape
Wire, 28 gauge

Instructions

Wrap floral tape around a piece of wire, covering all wiring and gluing. Wrap flowers & garland around wire holding in place with floral tape or gluing to hold flowers in place. Tie a multi-loop bow with long tails from ribbon. Wire bow to wreath at back, gluing to hold in position if necessary. Tuck leaves in amongst flowers, wiring and gluing to hold.

Games:

Pairing Fairies Race (ages 4 and up)

Object: To be the first team of fairies to finish the relay race.

You will need: Two relay courses which include the following for each team. ( Feel free to change the individual items below, these are just suggestions).

A golden pot of fairy dust ( spray paint a small clay pot and , plug bottom and partially fill with golden glitter.

A Moat with a plank across-This can be a real moat like a child's pool with a wide board or it can be a pretend moat drawn in the grass with a plank across.

A pile of daisies

A 5' fairy ring (circle marked in the grass. You can use spray paint or if inside, use a rope or a circular garland made of balloons. See balloon garland instructions here.

Heart Cookie pairs. Two small heart shaped sugar cookies, baked with overlapping edges to form two joined hearts ( using Pillsbury refrigerated dough makes it easy).

Before the party, set up the course.

Divide the children into two teams and each team into pairs of fairies.

Demonstrate how they should run the course:

The first two fairies in each team hold hands and run to their pots of gold, sprinkle a pinch of fairy dust. Holding Hands, each team runs to the moat and cross one at a time, one waiting for the other. They hold hands again and run to the pile of daisies and put ine in each other's hair. Then, they run to the fairy ring, and holding hands, skip around the circle singing, "Fairies under the water, fairies under the tree, Pink and purple pretty fairies just like me." Finally, they run to the plate of cookies and break a heart pair in two, each take one and run back to their team, tagging the next pair. The first team of fairy pairs to finish wins.

Pass the Fairy Dust

Play like Hot Potato - Everyone sits in a circle and passes a pretty clear plastic container (filled with glitter & wrapped in a piece of tulle & tired with a bow) from one person to the next. Someone calls time or stops the music and the person left holding the Fairy Dust is out. Continue until there is only one person left.

"Fairy Says "- Play like Simon Says.

"Face Painting" - Hire someone to come and paint the girls faces. This is a wonderful activity for a fairy party.

 Cake Ideas:

Fairies Garden Cake Instructions

Bake a 9 X 13 cake in any flavor. Once it is cooled, remove it from the pan and frost the entire cake with chocolate icing. Use lady fingers to line the sides of the entire cake to look like a picket fence. Top your cake with Oreo cookie crumbs. Make flowers out of assorted candy (gumdrops, gummy lifesavers) and green toothpicks as the stems. Green gumdrops are cute as leaves (flatten them with your fingers to give them the leaf shape). Place them in rows on the cake and make simple labels for each row (posies, roses, etc.) - a very cute and easy cake!
