Pony Tail Fun
For a fun indoor activity, get some kids hair ties
and take one and loop 3 foot strands of yarn until
you have a thick 1 1/2 foot pony tail. Then use
another hair tie to secure the yarn onto first hair
tie. Have the children hook the first hair tie onto
something to hold it (ie foot, banister, chair leg)
then let them slip beads and tie ribbons to decorate
while they braid or twist the pony tail yarn. When
finished secure with another hair tie. Now after all
the fun of decorating the pony tail's, let each
child wear her creation for a fun picture. Get
email addresses from the moms so you can send them
copies of the pictures or print them out to give to
each child or send in a thank you.
Horse and Pony Balloon
Relay Race
This is just a variation
on the old sit on the balloon and pop it race.
Split your partygoers into two teams. Have a
few balloons blown up for each team. Have them
take a balloon and run to another point about 30
feet away. Once there they should do some sort
of action as if they were caring for a horse.
For example you could have some furry fabric there
that the child would need to brush like a horse,
without breaking the balloon of course. If the
balloon should break then the child would need to
run back and get another balloon and try again.
Another child could pour oats from a bag into a bowl
in front of the balloon. Then, now that the
horse is ready to go, the last child could put a
"saddle" blanket on the balloon and sit on it to pop
it. First team to finish all their tasks and pop the
balloon wins.
Horse Coloring Book
Play this game using the same concept as the classic game of musical chairs…one less hat than there are children for each round. Place a pile of
Cowboy Hats on a table that the kids must walk around while the music is playing. When the music is turned off, the kids must scramble to put on a hat. The child without a hat must leave the game, and the game continues with one less hat until there is one child remaining – the winner.
Tell the kids that you need help in rounding up the animals. Get one
Plastic Horse Each and a long piece of yarn for each child at the party. Tie a piece of yarn to each animal, and hide them all around the farm, winding the string under, over and around trees and bushes (or furniture if you are inside). Each child is given the end of a string, and must follow it to find the hidden animal, and bring it safely back to the stall. |
Food Ideas
Create a buckboard buffet using old wooden planks, or cover a separate food table with a Red Gingham Table Cover. Let the guests sit on bales of hay to eat.
Give the young guests some treats that horses love to snack on too...apples, carrots, granola or trail mix, and starlight peppermints!
When the riders finish, they’ll be good and ready to eat a hearty meal. Use cookie cutters to cut out horse shaped sandwiches. Serve:
- Pigs-in-a-Poke (hot dogs wrapped with crescent roll dough),
- corn on the cob,
- watermelon wedges, and
- fresh squeezed lemonade in Glass Boot Mugs.
Turn Cowboy Hats upside down, line them with
Bandanas and fill them with:
- Trail Mix
- Golden Nuggets
- Haystacks
- Animal Crackers and
- Crunchy Critters
As the excitement is so high at children’s birthday parties, most young children will eat very little, and the waste can be disheartening. If you choose not to put out a big spread, schedule your party during a time when parents will not expect that their children will eat a meal…and serve only cake, ice cream, and a few other munchies such as animal crackers, grapes, raisins and trail mix.
